The Silkie is one of the oldest and most recognisable ornamental chicken breeds in the world, famous for its extraordinarily soft, fur-like or silk-like plumage. Its feathers lack the small hooks (barbicels) that hold ordinary feathers together, giving the bird its fluffy, downy appearance. Beyond its unique plumage, the Silkie has several other distinctive traits: black skin and bones, turquoise-blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot instead of the usual four.

Lifestyle Silkies are exceptionally calm and friendly, which is why they are often kept as pets. They get along well with humans and other animals, and are easy to handle. Silkie hens are renowned for their unusually strong maternal instinct — they often brood and raise not only their own chicks, but also those of other bird species, such as ducks and quails. Because their feathers lack water-resistant structure, they cope poorly with cold and damp conditions and need a dry, warm environment.
Origin and distribution The breed originated in ancient China (Taihe, Jiangxi Province) more than 1,000 years ago. The first Western description came from the Venetian traveller Marco Polo in the 13th century, who wrote of “fowls with fur-like feathers.” The breed reached Europe via the Silk Road, and in 1874 it was officially recognised by the American Poultry Association. Today, Silkies are kept worldwide as ornamental and exhibition birds.
