The green marmoset is a species of monkey that lives in savannas and forest edges. As a rule, it can be found near water sources. This animal spends the night on the branches of trees or bushes. Each flock (up to 80 animals) of monkeys consists of several groups (from 2 to 11 individuals). Their composition is diverse – young bachelor males; males, females and their offspring. Females stay together, males lead more separate lives. There is a strict hierarchical system among females and males. The male leader performs guardian functions. Both sexes take part in defending the territory from rivals.

Conservation status: Least risk

Interesting fact

The green monkey (like all monkeys of the genus Chlorocebus) was well known in ancient Egypt.

A fresco depicting a monkey found in Akrotiri on the Mediterranean island of Santorini proves that this monkey was known to the locals around 2000 BC.
